Chapt 1: First Encounters

Last Updated: July 5, 2025By

The salty breeze swept across the deck of the Hinode, a sleek and modern training vessel bobbing gently in Yokohama Harbor. For Ayumi Tanaka, a first-year cadet at the prestigious Maritime Academy of Japan, this was her first taste of life at sea. She stood near the railing, her short navy blue uniform fluttering in the wind, eyes wide with excitement and a hint of nervousness.

“Can you believe we’re actually here?” Ayumi whispered to her best friend, Hana, who stood beside her. Hana, with her long black hair tied back in a neat ponytail and her deep brown eyes shimmering with anticipation, grinned back.

“I know, right? It feels surreal,” Hana replied, her voice barely audible over the sound of the waves lapping against the hull.

Their academy had selected them for a month-long training cruise aboard the Hinode, a tradition for first-year cadets to familiarize themselves with life onboard a naval vessel. For Ayumi and Hana, who had been inseparable since their first day of orientation, this was more than just a training exercise; it was an adventure waiting to unfold.

As they navigated through the busy deck, Ayumi caught sight of Captain Sato, a seasoned officer known for his strict demeanor and unwavering commitment to discipline. He stood tall near the bridge, his uniform crisp and his gaze sharp as he surveyed the cadets preparing for departure.

“I heard Captain Sato is quite the legend,” Ayumi murmured, her eyes flicking nervously towards the imposing figure.

Hana chuckled softly. “Don’t worry, Ayumi. We’ve trained hard for this moment. Just follow the rules, and we’ll be fine.”

Ayumi nodded, though her stomach fluttered with nerves. She had always been diligent in her studies and training, yet nothing could have prepared her for the thrill and apprehension of stepping onto a real naval vessel.

As the Hinode slowly eased away from the dock, Ayumi found herself drawn to the sight of the open sea stretching out before them. The sun cast a golden hue across the water, its reflection dancing like fireflies on the waves. A sense of freedom washed over Ayumi, mingling with the excitement of the unknown.

Over the next few days, Ayumi and Hana settled into their routine aboard the Hinode. Mornings began early with physical training on the deck, followed by classes in navigation, seamanship, and maritime law. Evenings were spent studying in their cramped cabin, poring over textbooks and charts under the dim glow of a desk lamp.

One afternoon, as Ayumi was practicing tying knots near the stern, a voice called out to her.

“Need a hand with that?”

Startled, Ayumi looked up to find a tall girl with striking blue eyes and a mischievous grin standing before her. Her uniform was slightly disheveled, hinting at a rebellious streak beneath her confident demeanor.

“I’m Emi,” the girl introduced herself, extending a hand. “First-year cadet, like you. Thought I’d offer some assistance.”

Ayumi hesitated for a moment before accepting the handshake. “I’m Ayumi. Nice to meet you, Emi.”

Emi’s grin widened. “Nice to meet you too, Ayumi. So, what do you think of life aboard the Hinode so far?”

As Ayumi glanced around at the bustling deck and the cadets going about their duties, she couldn’t help but smile. “It’s challenging, but exciting. How about you?”

Emi shrugged nonchalantly. “Eh, it’s alright. I prefer the thrill of the sea to the monotony of the classroom. But hey, we’re in this together now, right?”

Ayumi nodded, feeling a sense of camaraderie blooming between them. Perhaps life aboard the Hinode wouldn’t be so daunting after all, especially with newfound friends like Emi by her side.
